Lexis+ UK Quick Start Guide

Introduction

Lexis+ UK provides full text access to reported and unreported Irish and UK case law, including the Irish Reports (only place where these are available), international case law, UK legislation and UK legal journals. Also covers books, journals, news and company, financial and industry sources

Access

 

Available from the library web site:

  • Go to www.atu.ie/library
  • Choose Databases A-Z
  • Go to L - LexisNexis (alternate names Lexis+ UK Nexis)

You may need to enter your ATU user name and password:

Students: studentnumber@atu.ie and ATU Password 
 

Staff: firstname.lastname@atu.ie and ATU Password 

Searching

Go to Content on the homepage first, to refine your item types: This provides options to limit your search by cases, legislation, books articles before starting your search.

  1. Case search

Go to Content: Click on Cases

Enter your term: You can search by party names or citation, simply type into search box: 1998 2 ir 540 (you do not need to use punctuation or capitals) r v glatt, 2002 ewca crim 2456. Click on the title of the case in the results page to read it.

2.Journals search

Go to Content: Click on Books & Journals

Click on Journals: within content type

Enter your term: “Calderbank letter” 

Boolean/Phrase: Use and to find all terms, use “quotation marks” to find phrases, use OR to broaden the search to find alternative keywords e.g. health and safety and construction or building site

  1. 3. Legislation Search (UK legislation only)

Go to Content: Click on Legislation

Enter your terms: Damages Act 1996

Refine your results

When your search results appear:

  1. Case search

Using the panel on the left-hand side of the results page, use the dropdown to limit by a particular jurisdiction or court e.g. Ireland. Refine by year/years by sliding the date slider or use the calendar to put in exact dates e.g. 1994. Use the dropdown to limit to specific practice areas e.g. banking and finance. You can also tick the content type you prefer e.g. case reports, case overview

View: Click on the title of the case and if the citation is in blue, click on it to get the ‘Court Ready PDF’

  1. Journals search

Limit to Practice Area/Topics: Using the panel on the left-hand side of the results page, use the dropdown to limit to specific practice areas e.g. Administrative Law

Limit to Sources: Select the particular journal you want the articles from e.g. International Journal of Constitutional Law

 

Advanced Search

Enter your term(s): Put your search terms/keywords into the Terms fields, which are easily laid out on the page to help you find All of the terms, Any of the terms, Exactly the phrase, Exclude the terms. Once you type something into the field, press the ADD button. e.g. dignity and “police custody” or “police detention”

Once you press Add it goes into the search bar at the top of the page. When your search is all added, press the red magnifying glass to run the search.

Click on the word ‘Help’ on the Lexis+ UK homepage in the top right-hand corner.
