Accessibility and the Library

ATU Accessibility banner

The library works with the Access Office to help support students with additional needs. Library staff aim to ensure that students with additional support requirements are able to make full use of the Library services and facilities.

The following services can be arranged:

  • One to one tours of the Library and finding services and resources through the library website.
  • Assistance with study/training room bookings.
  • Book retrieval service.
  • Accessible book formats.

If you need assistance with book location, retrieval, access to shelves, or moving books to other floors during your visit, library staff are happy to assist. Please ask at the information desk or contact us on Live Chat.

Users may request that materials be retrieved in advance of their visit. You can email us in advance of your visit. Alternatively, when on site, students can ask at the information desk for an item to be retrieved or ask a member of staff to accompany them to the shelf to retrieve an item. A postal service will be provided to students (registered with the access office) who are unable to visit the library in person.

If you have any questions or comments about the Library and its services, or suggestions of ways in which they can be improved, contact or email us.

The Cubbie

The Cubbie is a sensory regulation pod situated on the library’s ground floor. It’s designed to help manage sensory input and has been shown to lower stress and anxiety by 60% within 15 minutes. This customizable environment offers adjustable lighting, sound, and visual elements to create a comfortable and focused setting, particularly beneficial for individuals with sensory sensitivities.

Height Adjustable Tables

Adjustable tables are an excellent addition to any learning environment, offering flexibility and adaptability to meet the diverse needs of students. These tables allow students to switch between sitting and standing positions, which not only supports good posture but also promotes better circulation and reduces fatigue during long study sessions. They help create a more engaging learning atmosphere, as movement can boost energy and focus. Additionally, height-adjustable tables can accommodate students of varying ages and heights, ensuring that everyone has a comfortable and ergonomic workspace. This adaptability fosters a sense of ownership over their learning environment, empowering students to learn in ways that best suit their individual needs and preferences.

Bean Bags

In a college setting, the primary purpose of a beanbag is to provide flexible, informal seating that enhances comfort and encourages relaxation. Beanbags offer a versatile seating option that allows students to study or take a break from the structured academic environment. Their casual and cozy design fosters a laid-back atmosphere, promoting a sense of community and collaboration among students. At Yeats Library, there are nine beanbags dispersed throughout the space, offering students the opportunity to relax and study in comfort.

All the items listed below are available to borrow at the information desk on the middle floor of the library near the main entrance. Simply ask a staff member, and we’ll be happy to assist you. Please note that all items must be used within the library building only.

 HDMI Cable

The HDMI cable allows you to transmit both video and audio to another device. Some of our group study rooms are equipped with screens where you can share your work, practice presentations, or play videos for collaborative discussions with classmates or colleagues.

 Markers and Eraser

Several of our group study rooms are equipped with whiteboards. You can borrow whiteboard markers to write or draw on whiteboards in a way that is easily visible and erasable. They can be used for presenting information, brainstorming, drawing diagrams, or solving problems during group discussions or study sessions.

There will be a whiteboard eraser included to remove the marker ink from the whiteboard surface, allowing the board to be reused multiple times. Together, the markers and eraser support interactive and flexible learning or collaboration.

 Noise Cancelling Headphones

Noise-cancelling headphones can reduce or eliminate background noise, allowing users to focus better in noisy environments. They are especially useful in settings like libraries, study areas, or public spaces where distractions can interfere with concentration. These headphones can help students listen to audio materials more clearly, reduce sensory overload, and create a more peaceful environment for studying.

C-Pen

The C-Pen is available to assist with reading and comprehension by scanning and reading printed text aloud. It's especially helpful for individuals with reading difficulties, such as dyslexia, or for those learning a new language. The C-Pen enhances accessibility by allowing users to independently access written information, supporting learning, confidence, and equal participation in educational settings.

 Fidget Tools

The purpose of fidget tools is to help individuals, especially students, improve focus, manage stress, and support self-regulation. They provide a physical outlet for restless energy, which can be particularly beneficial for people with attention difficulties, anxiety, or sensory processing needs. By keeping the hands engaged, fidget tools can help the mind stay attentive and calm, making it easier to concentrate on tasks such as studying, reading, or listening.

Footrest

The purpose of footrests is to promote proper posture and enhance comfort, especially during extended periods of sitting. By supporting the feet and encouraging a natural leg position, footrests help reduce pressure on the lower back, improve circulation, and prevent discomfort or fatigue. They are particularly beneficial for individuals whose feet don’t rest flat on the floor, as they help maintain ergonomic alignment and support overall physical well-being during study.
