EndNote Online

This guide shows how to use EndNote Online

The Downloads tab on EndNote Online offers you 3 options:

  • Download the EndNote (Cite While You Write) tab for use in Microsoft Word (this is only necessary to download on your home device as it is automatically installed on all the PCs in ATU libraries (Galway) and in the IT Centre in ATU Galway). This tab is called ‘Cite While You Write’ (CWYW) and will allow you to insert references and automatically format citations and bibliographies in Microsoft Word.

  • Capture button. This is a bookmark that you can put on your web browser that will let you import reference data from the Internet that is not within bibliographic databases (e.g. newspaper articles).

  • EndNote Click. This resource allows you to store your full-text PDFs with the free browser plugin. Once you have the PDF, you can easily export it to EndNote.

Downloading the Plug-ins

  • Before downloading the EndNote Plug-ins, make sure you have Microsoft Word closed on your device
  • If you are using Windows, click on 'Download Windows with Internet Explorer plug-in' and this will take several minutes to download on your device. Follow the online instructions. This will work with Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge as well.
  • If you need to install the plug-in on several computers, use the .msi installer.
  • If you have a Macintosh computer, click on 'Download Macintosh'. When the installer has finished downloading, double click on the Cite While you Write button in your Downloads folder. Double click the button in the Installer window to begin the installation and follow remaining instructions.

You are given a number of options on where to install your Cite While You Write tool for Microsoft Word.

When you have downloaded the EndNote plug-in and opened up Microsoft Word, you may see the new EndNote tab on your Word toolbar labelled EndNote 20. This refers to the EndNote desktop. It is straightforward to link your Word documents to EndNote Online.

  • Click on the EndNote 20 tab
  • Click on 'Preferences'
  • In the window that comes up, choose Application
  • Use the drop down menu beside 'Application' to choose EndNote online
  • Key in your student email address and your EndNote Online password > OK.

Capture Reference

In Internet Explorer, the Capture button should automatically display in your browser’s toolbar after you have downloaded the Internet Explorer plug-in.

If using Chrome, Firefox or Safari:

  • Go to the Downloads page in Endnote Online and drag the Capture Reference grey icon on the screen to the bookmarks bar (Chrome or Firefox) or favourites bar (Safari).
  • A Capture Reference button will now appear on the Bookmarks bar (Chrome or Firefox) or Favourites bar (Safari).

See 'Adding in References' for further instructions on capturing reference information from websites.
